Ayurveda is the science that indicates the appropriate and inappropriate, happy or sorrowful conditions of living, what is auspicious or inauspicious for longevity, as well as the measure of life itself.
-Charaka Samhita I.41
Ayurveda is an ancient health science that was first developed over 5,000 years ago in India, and continues to be developed and expanded upon in clinical practice throughout the world today.
The goal of Ayurveda is simple: to protect the health of a healthy person and to cure disease in an unhealthy person. This can be achieved by bringing the body, mind, and soul into balance. When everything is balanced, the body is healthy, the mind is strong, and the soul is liberated. So how do we achieve this balance?
Everything in this world is made up of the five elements, and from those five elements, the three doshas are derived: Vata, Pitta, Kapha. That means that you, as well, are made up of these five elements and the subsequent three doshas. Vata: air and ether. Pitta: fire and water. Kapha: earth and water.
It is said in Ayurveda that in order to treat the client, one must understand the nature of the client, the nature of the imbalance, and the nature of the medicine. Thus, Ayurvedic health counseling is highly individualized to meet the unique needs of the client, based upon what is harmonious or disharmonious for the nature of the client themselves.
